Thanksgiving Down Under 2009

I really forgot how important and big a deal Thanksgiving is to me until dinner snowballed from a mere mentioned possibility to a massive feast spilling into the street. Honestly, B Street is an amazing place to live on. I'll just start there and fill in the details later since it's time for bed at the moment, but I want to emphasize the great company I shared this year's Thanksgiving with. Hello interweb travellers, I blog again. I just wanted to commemorate my first cannulation
(read: stick a needle in a vein to introduce a longer term plastic tube with which to access veins with for IV medication) with a blog post. Well, isn't this nice? Lovely. Yesh. I was a tad nervous, but my volunteer/coworker was gracious and fun. Note: when being distracted by a senior nurse who's giving you advice and quizzing you, make sure to check the tourniquet you tightened 10 minutes ago.

Being accredited to take bloods and cannulate will make my job (ergo, your visit to the ED) run a lot smoother.

A little history to our little neck of the woods. Our house (#15) is the former #23).

Bennett Street was formed in O'Connell after 1874, and may be named after Police Staff Sergeant Bennett who was posted to Newtown in 1863, or for Samuel Bennett. The latter Mr. Bennett was part-owner of the 'Town & Country Journal' and (with Henry Parkes) the 'Empire' newspaper. Until 1873 he lived in 'Willow Lodge' which still stands nearby off Wilson Street and is noted in a poem 'By Cliffs and Sea' by fellow-Newtownsman Henry Kendall. A subdivision map no N6/240 at Mitchell Library suggests a financial link between Samuel Bennett and Colonial Treasurer Sir Saul Samuels MLA.

Bennett Street was named in 1905, when it was officially recognised as a street in the Bennett’s Estate sub-division (DP4638). Prior to this it had existed as a private driveway providing access from Queen Street to “Rosebank”, a 2 storey “villa cottage” located at the rear of Lot N of the old Bligh Estate, fronting Wilson Street. The Bennett’s Estate land had been in the Bennett family for over 50 years. Samuel Bennett, had purchased Lot N, of just over an acre and a quarter, from Joseph Frey Josephson, Solicitor, on 9 September 1854 for £500. There were two 2-storey houses on it, “Rosebank”, at the North-West corner and “Willow Lodge”, which still stands, located closer to Wilson Street towards the South East corner. Bennett purchased the 2 smaller lots facing Queen Street some 20 years later. These purchases were probably made to provide separate access to “Rosebank” from Queen Street. Bennett, a Cornishman, was a compositor by trade and had come to the colony in 1841 as a Bounty Immigrant, under contract the proprietor of what was then the Sydney Herald. At the time of the purchase he was still employed at the Herald, supervising the Printing Department. In 1853, having established himself in the Colony, he sent to Cornwall for his now widowed mother and his three maiden sisters. They arrived in June 1854 and Bennett’s need for more space than his 2-storey semi-detached residence in Burke Street Woolloomooloo provided, prompted his purchase of the Newtown property. Bennett lived at “Rosebank”, which became 14-18 Bennett Street after the 1905 sub-division, “Willow Lodge”, at 206 Wilson Street, was probably occupied by his mother and her three daughters. C L A S S I C

Anyone who has had to take a humanities class at uni has come across the critical analysis essay. Writing these can be grueling for those of us who don't express themselves very well when given rules and guidelines. A recent paper topic had me examining the Australian healthcare system and arguing its inequities.

The other day I was in the kitchen chatting with my Siberian housemate, Lev, an engineering student. I was talking about this paper I had to write. Apparently 2500 words is REALLY long to him. I corrected him and said, "Well, it's more than that, it's like 8-9 pages." With a straight, serious face, he said in his Russian accent:

"...are you allowed to put pictures and diagrams in it?"

My only response was uncontrollable laughter and, "Do I have your permission to write that on my blog? That's too funny."

R O A R & S N O R E

This was a fun fun fun weekend. Andrew flew into Sydney for a sleepover at the Taronga Zoo. Can you remember the first time you were at the zoo? The animals don't go anywhere after everyone leaves. I have a greater appreciation of the zoo this time around, the staff who fed us and showed us animals and took us on nighttime walks were impressive and just very nice people. Here are some photos.

NOT SO SECRET GARDEN

It is a new year. Life is good. My friend Mary has an amasing thumb. It's GREEN! Last week, we got stuff for my garden spaces. Eventually there will be photos of the back patio to show you if the following things survived my BLACK thumb:
broccoli, sage, thyme, chives, leeks, asparagus, fennel, baby beetroot, oregano, cos lettuce, mizuna, basil, mint, violets, pansies and seeds for: sweet peas, nasturtiums, alyssum, forget-me-nots, and wildflowers.

I also picked up a bottlebrush and banksia tree at an expo in Darling Harbour yesterday.

Australians just don't "do" Halloween like the Americans do...

Tonight I hemmed and I hawed. Should I nap or should I study, or should I join in on the Best Critical Mass of the year? HALLOWEEN!! The majority of CMs I've gone on have been the Halloween Ride. They're tough to miss and they're just a lot of fun...in cities where Halloween is actually celebrated, I was soon to find out...

At the last minute, I decided to go. I didn't have a costume, what was I going to do?! Oh, I'll settle for a simple adornment, just so I don't miss out...so, I tied the great lantern my Best Bud mailed to me to the top of my helmet and secured two red flashy bike lights to the inside.

My Bianchi and I zipped out the door. Within a kilometre, the stares and points penetrated my thick sleepy skull...wait, wait, WAIT! Is THIS the Reality of what it means that Australians just don't "get" Halloween?! "That's all right, Angela, don't worry...when you get to the Hyde Park Fountain to meet the rest of the Critical Massers, THEN you'll be underdressed!," I consoled myself.

I was wrong.

A GRAND DAY OUT

Sydney's a gorgeous place to cycle. I love cycling through the city. I can be really friendly to strangers - smile, say hello, and zip on by, without the social awkwardness, when walking, of biding the time until you pass. I guess it makes me feel like some sort of urban humanitarian. I was also getting a bit tired of old photos so I thought I'd go trigger happy today.

BUTTERFLY

Tonight my very passionate friend Dave Horgan hosted a fundraising-musical event at the Sandringham where the proceeds went to two organisations: a child sexual assault counselling and resource centre, and a child abuse prevention service. He mobilised Carla Werner and Steve Balbi who donated their time and talent to play their acoustic guitars and fill the Sandringham private room with beautiful and soulful music. Our Special Guest, Dave himself, performed his own piece. Later, there was an open mic.

I'm home now, and feel so alive after seeing people who source a well of passion to perform. aurgh! I just love seeing people lose their inhibitions sometimes...

On a related note, have you ever watched a kung fu film and left the cinema thinking you could defy gravity and kick your own nose? Worse (doubtfully better) yet, your body thinks the same thing and decides to try your obvious skills out. Needless to say, it's nice to live in a neighborhood where no one bats an eyelash seeing a girl walking home singing out loud like off key.

RED BULL

Despite my housemate Voitek's encouragment, a *tiny little bit* of Red Bull ("sugar free - not the regular b/c the sugar will make you hyper...") is not really helping me stay focused. I've had about 10mls (per oral) and feel like I've just bathed the enamel on my teeth with hydrochloric acid and have to consciously relax my shoulders and upper back.

Those poor lab rats which were used to experiment on taurine and caffeine...

Have you tried Red Bull before? I feel like it should be treated like a drug with a comprehensive assessment form that can help you decide whether it's suitable to your needs and what dosage is appropriate for you.

When I unclench my jaw, I'd be happy to chat on the phone if you should call to wish me luck and focus on my next school paper...

M O V I N G R I G H T A L O N G . . .

This is a snapshop where "END" is my nursing school campus and "START" is where I'm moving tomorrow (again). It's a mere 2.11km!

Today's excerise is to see if I can recount the number of times I've moved in the last few years (starting from tomorrow and working my way backwards):

Originally, my list was just the moves in Australia but then it just looked puny. I thought it felt like a lot more than it looked on screen so I kept retracing the steps before. Oh well. In any case, rest assured that the moves are in and of themselves, their own little adventures.

I recently watched a film at the Newtown Dendy, an arthouse theatre, called Breakfast on Pluto with Cillian Murphy and Liam Neeson. The main character, Kitten, travels around with a tiny little suitcase. I wondered if I could do that. I decided that if I had more fashion sense, I might. Otherwise, I'd be such a boring identity - just wearing a black t-shirt and jeans every day. My sneakers aren't even that exciting. But in Breakfast, Kitten looks GREAT and you just know that whatever's in that art deco little suitcase is just as good.

On the other hand, after taking one look at me you wouldn't think I've got a go-go outfit w/coordinating accessories and stockings in my non-descript suitcase. Probably just a dead cat or something.

FREAK HAIL STORM HITS SYDNEY

In about 20 minutes, there was no green left on the ground. Piles of white marbles blanketed Sydney in the span of a half hour, and they kept getting bigger. I must admit, I've asked several reliable sources, and this is extremely unusual.

I got my umbrella, giddy as a school girl, and ran outside laughing with every yelp and "ouch!"

Fresh Starts

I can't believe the irony. I was about to publish my post (about Fresh Starts), and it somehow got lost in cyberspace so now, I have to start all over.

A lot has happened in the last few weeks to which the only appropriate coping response is to start fresh:

- I was reminded of my lack of skill in the art of essay writing, time management, and 3 hour essay exams
- A 2-year relationship has ended (amicably, not to worry)
- I moved out of my apartment and crossed my name off the lease
- My computer presented a lovely blue screen of death a few days ago, and I lost the last 3 years' worth of documents, photos, correspondence, life plans, etc.
- A new semester at school has just started

Coincidentally, as therapy for the break-up, I looked at every single digital photo on my computer. I also selected a really nice bunch to slide-show as my screen saver and these made me very happy:

- mom on a water slide...on a cruise ship?!
- andrew, la tour eiffel, and cotton candy
- split, croatia on my birthday
- montana
- dad in a hot italian leather jacket
- my bud

So, if you have any feedback on anything in this post, I'd encourage you to write to me. Chances are I really miss you, and especially with all the changes happening (when it rains, it pours, doesn't it?) I'm more likely to be highly sentimental and will tell you how much I appreciate you.

The adventure continues, and happily, I'd say. I've been bombarded by immense support, kindness, generosity, hilarity, humility, and countless other good things and experiences.

SETTLING IN:

I started this post in February, I think. Here's a secret - I created headings for various posts I wanted to publish so my blog would have some cohesion and be the least bit interesting for you to read.

The interesting thing is, only today have I noticed some signs that I'm settling in in this strange new land...For one, I've been using more and more American slang. Words and phrases like:

- lech (as in 'lecherous', as in, "we're at a hillbilly gig - why would this attract such a lecherous man who'd bite my friend Kate on the ankle?")

- well, that's random

Am I out of date yet? Still, I've now found many Aussie phrases persisting in my daily speech:

- as you would (an appropriate response if someone says, "I couldn't get the Jeep to start again, so I doused it with kerosene and set it on fire.")

- reckon (as in, "Do you reckon they were upset to lose the World Cup?")

I also couldn't put my finger on it, but my brain's been flooding with classic American media from the 80s and early 90s like:

- The Jerk; Planes, Trains, and Automobiles; Back to the Future; Wayne's World (Party on) and Bohemian Rhapsody

- MacGuyver, The A-Team, GI Joe, Thundercats, Voltron, Little House on the Prairie (with Melissa Gilbert and Michael Landon)

Feel free to psychoanalyse (has anyone noticed my habit of spelling words with "s" instead of our customary "z"s?). As always, I encourage your feedback.

T A M W O R T H, N S W

Tamworth is the home of the biggest Country Western Festival in New South Wales, nay, in all of the vast Land of Australia. We were there 6 months later...it was obvious we weren't local yokels.

So, the last two weeks have been quite an adventure. I dressed necrotic wounds whose aroma brought me back to Organic Chemstry and that day we learned about aromatics (8 carbon benzene rings that tend to smell). That day, a tray was passed around the class w/various vials of compounds. I never really considered I'd smell "B U R N I N G F L E S H" ever again. It's invasive.

This clinical placement was true encouragement for me to stay in a career in health care. I'm not in a reflective mood at the moment, but I can say that there was one patient whose patient notes read, "Gored by pig." This poor woman had an infected wound on her leg where this alleged pig gored her 2 years ago. TWO YEARS. I'm such not a country girl. I imagined Babe gnawing on her calf...

CONCEPT OF TIME

CORRECTION: David reminded me that I took this photo from Mrs. Macquarie's Chair yesterday. I think my concept of time has gone all crazy, but maybe it's just my perception...which brings me to tonight's post topic: CONCEPT OF TIME

A recurring theme in my conversations lately has revolved around sleeping habits, and how to explain them. Since I've been in Australia, I have been going to bed early (9:30-11:30pm), and waking up early (4:30-7:30am). I find myself waking up anywhere from 2 to 20 times during the course of the night.

Here have been former conclusions:
1. Jet lag
2. Feels like 'being on holiday'
3. Different bed/space
4. Climate
5. Caffeine
6. Lack of caffeine
7. More exercise
8. Not enough exercise

But what really is the cause of this new-found habit of tossing and turning?

This is where my discussion turns to one on the concept of time. What if the habit always existed and there is no new cause; instead, it's my concept of what *often* means that has changed?

Over the last year, I had corrective LASEK eye surgery. Until then, I had terrible vision without corrective lenses - so terrible that when I'd wake up in the middle of the night, I really wouldn't notice that my room looked any different than the inside of my eyelids. NOW, I have 20/20 vision and when I wake up, I can see the alarm clock very very clearly. I can remember vivid red numbers like "1:25AM", "2:19AM", "4:53AM", and so on. I mean, I don't feel particularly more or less tired during the day but continue to complain to anyone within earshot that although I'm enjoying Australia, that I haven't quite settled enough to get a decent nights' sleep.

Other conclusions I've drawn based on my former perceptions:
- I need to live in a 2 bedder (i.e. "2 bedroom apartment") and get another bed
- I should hunt for Melatonin to help regulate my sleeping cycles
- Everyone else is against my good nights' sleep
- Kookaburras really do have the most annoying and loud cackle (even worse outside my window) in this universe and should be silenced, at least from 4am to 9am

So you see, from now on, instead of telling people how I'm not getting enough sleep, I'm going to tell people my opinion on the pros and cons of corrective eye surgery. I think the benefits far outweigh the cons.

I thought I'd offer some nice background music whilst (they say "whilst" here) you read today's post.
My first comment is that first impressions are useful for forming opinions, but certainly not absolute. Here is a little guide to help you understand how they stand in my reality:

My first impression of...
- My brother Andrew = probably along the lines of "smelly" but...no wait, I still have that impression...
- City of Chicago = too clean and quiet
- Australia as a visitor = a nice place to visit, and I might want to live here
- Australia as a resident = The communities have so much going on and I'm happy to be a part of it

The longer I waited, the easier I thought it would be to post a blog. Hey, more material, right? Wrong. Can I even remember what I did yesterday? Going through my photos, I realize I haven't been as trigger happy as I thought. Out of a hundred or so photos I've taken in Australia so far, most of them are of kitchens, gross carpets, balconies, and rooms of apartments we've been hunting. Generally, I've decided that a photograph (taken by me) can't do justice to the beautiful scenery of Australia. I tried taking a close up photo of a Huntsman spider and ended up with a screenshot of miscellaneous leaves and twigs. This photo was taken from the balcony of Florian and Anya who live in Cremorne Point at New Year's. This year's theme for Sydney's annual celebration was - you got it - LOVE.
